Life lessons.

In the short amount of life that I've lived so far, I've come to notice that life is but a series of arrival and departures, of opening and closing doors, of highs and lows, and goodbyes and hellos. I've also come to realize that the spaces between are often these transitional phases of waiting that call for longanimity. In between are these moments of absolute stillness -- no movement, just being.

Ironically enough, it's in these times I find myself unable to be still. So it's in these times, that I remember some of the most important lessons I have learned in my life thus far.

1. I am nobody's fixer, healer, source of joy or of fulfillment.
I am a beggar, a sick person, the dying, the marginalized in society, but I know where to go for my needs. The best thing I can do is share that treasure with others. I can only hope to point towards the direction of Jesus who is the ultimate source of healing and fulfillment.

2. Things are always becoming undone -- They'll fail, they'll disappoint. All things are passing.
For this reason, we don't dwell on what has been destroyed or what seems to be falling apart. Similarly, we don't rest our weary heads on things. When certain things in your life are changing, let them and just be who you are. Have courage.

3. Though circumstances of life constantly change, One thing remains.
God is able. He is faithful. The love stored up in heaven for us is infinite. We need to remain confident and secure in God's promise. Don't let anything rob you of your peace, your joy, or of your hope in God. Look ahead, bless all with your love and presence. Be confident in all because the One who is the fixer, the healer, and the source of all is great, is able. There is wisdom in all that He is and in all that He does. Trust.

4. This is not it.
Lift your head up when you are bogged down. Set your mind and your heart onto things that are eternal. Set your life on Christ who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He is the mediator between Heaven and Earth, God and man, the mind and heart. Find your way in Him.

5. Turn to Mary.
She is the ultimate defense against evil, and ourselves. She unites us to her Son, who is our life. She shows us how to love and be loved with the kind that liberates and brings us Heaven. (Happy birthday, Mama)

6. Everything God does is for us.
Sometimes, it doesn't always feel like God is on our side or that he hears us at all especially during our low points, but that's the very wisdom of God. It is beyond words or feelings. It simply is. The love of God is so pure  that it will always need our 'yes' before it can enter our hearts. If we allow Him, His love is powerful enough to break every chain that binds us.

7. God always, always, always gives us the right amount of grace in the moment that we need it.
There's no need to always be wondering about the "What should I do?" Sometimes, all that God asks of us is to be still while He does the work in us. "Patience obtains all things."

8. Prayer is powerful.
It's important to realize that we won't be the ones to hold the answers for people... and that will oftentimes make you feel utterly helpless. This helplessness is so humbling though that it makes one feel and realize that only God can truly make things happen in our lives. The best thing we can do for others is to lift them up to the Lord.

"As soon as you truly abandon yourself in the Lord, you will know how to be content with whatever happens. You will not lose your peace if your undertakings do not turn out the way you hoped, even if you have put everything into them, and used all the means necessary. For they will have "turned out" the way God wants them to." - St. Jose Maria Escriva
